Review Book

  • Dissemination of information is one of the corner stones of the advancement of knowledge. It is through the sharing and spread of knowledge, especially if it is a knowledge that would benefit the body of science and arts, that the human abilities to create and build will expand. It should be the commitment of any thinker and practitioner to attempt to broaden the base of knowledge among others in general, and the professionals in particular. An effective approach to making this commitment become reality, and thus expanding the knowledge base, is to provide the thoughts, the techniques and the know-how that have been tried and tested over times to those who are following the same path and exercising similar trades. Sharing of such experiences, both the successful and the failed ones, will only assist those who are in the same professional field, and do or will in the future get involved in similar practices.

Architecture is an important part of arts. At the same time it is a science. Architecture is a continuous process from the initial thought and idea, or series of thoughts and ideas, to the imagination of forms, to the final productÑthe building.

  • The real formation of architecture begins by the creativity and the ability of the designer in imagining how the building is going to be born, to take shape. This is in most part art. The manifestation of architecture occurs when the thought, the idea, and the imagination become reality Ð the building is constructed. This is the science aspect of architecture. Through this process, and mainly the latter phase of it, the building comes to existence by applying the techniques and exercising the know-how. The details of how the various elements of the building are put together and are combined to make it stand up are of outmost importance. That is where detailing enters the picture. A building without proper detailing, no matter how wonderful and innovative the original thoughts and concepts were, will not achieve its artistic aspirations or its intended life.

    - Ali A. Kiafar
  • To achieve such objectives, the author takes a serious look at construction detailing and tries to avoid simply resorting to usual and commercially available details. Making this attempt, he wishes to expand the boundaries of architectural design and to encourage the capabilities through which the designer may bring out the hidden capacities that would achieve the designÕs objectives and intentions.

  • The Architecture of Details does not claim to be a perfect book. It certainly does contain areas and pieces that can be improved. The details presented in the book, at times, may in fact be unsuccessful, and even contrary to achieving the stated goals of the designs, as Mohammad Reza Nikbakht himself has acknowledged. However, the main value of what the author has embarked on is the considerable attempt in disseminating information and sharing one architectÕs experiences Ð an architect who is a prolific practitioner.
